May 17th

Yesterday was May 17th, which is Norways national day! We had a great time with both our families, eating a TRUCKLOAD of cake. Oh my goodness, my belly will never be the same. I wore my bunad which is something I always enjoy (you can see a full view of it in my about me page) and the boy dressed up too. May 17th is one of my favorite holidays!

Haaai!
Tomorrow Krish and I are leaving for a little vacation. We're going to my parents cabin in Vågå and we might stay as long as 2 weeks so there will be no posts from me in the meanwhile, but I'll be bringing my camera and hopefully I can share some of our trip with you when I get home. :)

Have a great weekend!

Last weekend randomness

Friday May 11th

Went for a walk in the pouring rain. Hooray for umbrellas!

Norway Designs had the new Arne Clausen bowls from Lucie Kaas. They've used Clausens lotus design that some of you might know from the Cathrineholm enamelwares from the 50ies and 60ies. I love Cathrineholm and I'd really like to get my hands on one of these bowls too.

Saturday May 12th

I went to my hometown to stay at my parents house for the night. Went out with some friends that evening, which was great as I hadn't seen them in a while. But earlier that day my brother and I took a walk in the woods with my nephiew Anton. He is the bees knees!

The area we walked there used to be a military fortress, built in 1902. We had so much fun exploring!

Things got extra exciting when we found this. We were pretty sure this must have belonged to a spy during the war. We looked everywhere for the other piece so that maybe we could extract the info inside it, but to no luck.

After all that excitement it was nice to sit down and have something to drink, before we headed back down.

^True!

Sunday May 13th

Red kitchen floors. There should be more of them. :)

Konadlicious' 3000 followers giveaway!

Carli over at Konadlicious is having a grand 3000 followers giveaway!

It's not that long ago since I discovered this blog, but it didn't take me long untill I had gone back through each and every post she'd ever written. It's a wonderful mix of vintage content (I would love to raid her closet!) and nail polish extravaganza.
"Everything in this giveaway is open Internationally.  There will be TWO major prizes.  One to cater for my Vintage Queens and another for my Nail Polish Queens!"

The prize for those who picks vintage is a $100 gift certificate from Miskonduct Clothing. I'm going to a wedding this summer and I have nothing to wear (hah! Well it DOES feel that way) so that would be perfect! The nail polish prize is a TON of stuff, worth a total of $490. You can see a list of all the prizes and all the info you need to join hereGIVEAWAY CLOSES 16th MAY 2012.

I wonder what dress I would pick if I won?

Beachy mom

Continuing the swimwear theme from a couple of days ago, here are a few pictures of my mom from the 60ies and 70ies that I found when I was visiting them this weekend. I always enjoy flicking though the old photo albums they have! Most of their albums are hiding somewhere in the basement at the moment after they moved last year, but I found one and snapped some pictures from it to share. :)

"There are enough of charming beach sirens to rest ones eyes on these days. 17 year old Elsa Svare from Stjørdal thinks life is wonderful during the summer vacation"

Early 70ies
Playing tennis in the backyard. Found this picture in a photo album and my dad has written "NO COMMENT" under it. :P

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

The beach is a-calling!

A few days ago it hailed here in Trondheim. Then came two days of glorious sunshine, which I took as an excuse to eat more icecream. And today? It's as gray as gray can get. All in all a very descriptive picture of how spring in Norway can be. But somewhere in the horizon summer is lurking, which has made me start thinking about swimsuits! I'll be spending 18 days in Spain this August/September and I am e-x-c-i-t-e-d!

I'm going to need a swimsuit or two! I've done a little bit of searching and there are quite a few repro alternatives out there. I'd rather have a repro than a actual vintage garment as I'll need something that I can wear and wash frequently without being worried about destorying a one of a kind piece of clothing. A lot of what I've been finding have been very alike - A lot of polkadots, cherries and plains in that classic 50s swimsuit shape. It would have been great with a little more versatility, but I'll gladly take any of these too. And most of these aren't what I would call budget friendly. *sad face* I found them on sites with different currencies but I'll post the USD equivalent for easier comparison.

Esther Williams is a retired competetive swimmer and movie star. She starred in many movies during the 40ies and 50s untill retiring from the film industry in 1960. She has fittingly lended her name to a line of retro swimwear that come in a different styles and patterns. I've never seen or tried one in person but from what I can gather they are of great quality and very flattering no matter what body shape you are. ModCloth sells quite a few different ones, but they are cheaper if buy buy them directly from the official Esther Williams website. The links I will be providing are from a third site (Retrodress) which offers the cheapest price I could find, but I haven't taken shipping/handling fees into concideration and I have no personal experience with this shop.

#1: Esther Williams - Red Stripes Classic Seath $65

#2: Esther Williams - Cabana Heat Classic Seath $65

#3: Esther Williams - Splash Classic Seath $65

#4: Esther Williams - Wild Thing Classic Seath $65

#5: Esther Williams - Black with Red Polkadot Classic Seath $ 65

Retrodress has loads more EW bathing costumes (including two pieces), click here to go to their EW section.

You can't go wrong with a plain one, right? You can always add extra intrest with a few nice accessories if you find it a bit too bland.

#6: Modcloth - "I'll Take The Scallops One" $149.99 (Out of stock ATM)
      Anthropologie - Cannes Maillot $148
I love this one, but the pricetag is not for me.

#7: Net-A-Porter - Norma Kamali/Bill Ruched Halterneck $606
The colour? Yay! The price? OUCH. Ouch, ouch, ouch.

#8: Lindex - Badedrakt rød $42
You can find Lindex in many countries in Europe. I wanted to try and find a retro looking swimsuit that I could actually try on in a store before buying it and this was the closest I got - A more modern twist on the classic. I don't think this is a winner in my book, but if I see it in person I will try it on. :)

#9: Ellos - Badedrakt med skjørt $59
Ellos is a online store available to some countries in Northern Europe. Ellos has a 50% discount for first time customers which would make this a option in the cheap end of the scale.

#10: Babygirl Boutique - Marilyn in Madrid red twist $42
Would love this one at that price (currently on sale) but they only have it in size XS.

Patterns and prints for president! I wish there were some more quirky ones, but here is a selection of the ones I found and liked. :)

#11: Cath Kidston - Sunspot Ruffled Swimsuit $72
How cute is this little number? I love that what appears to be polkadots are actually little suns or fuzzy circles. The entire back is rouched and it looks so comfertable! It's 100% cotton though, how would that work in the water?

#12: Downeast - Retro Revival Suit $49.99
A modern swimsuit with some retro elements. I don't think it's the one for me though, as I would like some ruffling across the belly and a little less cleavage. :)

#13: Kaliko - Elipse Print Halterneck Swimsuit $88
*makes grabby hands* Me gusta!

#14: Epla - Vintage bathingsuit $59
Epla is the Norwegian equivalent to Etsy, and this is the only actual vintage piece in my selection. I think it's been for sale for over a year! The only information on size is that it would best fit a S/M so it might be too small for me anyway.

#15: SimplyBe - Panache Page Halterneck Swimsuit $74
Cute button detail in the cleavage.

Already have these two

These two I already own, a bikini and swimsuit in cherry print, both from Pinupgirl Clothing. The black swimsuit is ok but it's too big for me now (I'm smaller now then when I bought it) and I would like something a little less rockabilly.
The bikini looks RIDICILOUS on me. I've never worn it since that first time I tried it on. Yuck. It would probably have looked better if I were a little more endowed in the chest area but I'm not so... No, just no. :P

What do you look for in a bathingsuit/bikini? Do you have any more suggestions on where to get them?

OOTD - May 7th

Another weekend passed. Friday meant, as always, taco dinner and watching TV. After Krish went to bed I saw The Notebook for the third time. It's a beautiful movie, both visually and story-wise, so if you haven't seen it and you're not allergic to romance, give it a try!

Allie: Say I'm a bird. Say it!
Noah: You're a bird.
Allie: Now say you're a bird too.
Noah: If you're a bird, I'm a bird.
Oh my heart. :)
Saturday we drove to my parents house where the whole family was gathered, and we ate dinner there. My dad has been hospitalised for the past few weeks after suffering 3 strokes, but he got to come home for the weekend so it was a relief to see him doing so well. After dinner at my parents house, we stopped by Krish's mom as well and eventually Saturday passed into the historybooks.

I'm not in the best of moods these days but a bit of lipstick and a walk outside helps, so that's what's on my agenda right now.

Included for free in this OOTD is this awkward pose. Yay!

Tank top: Felon Clothing (bought at Babygirl Boutique a long time ago)
Cardigan: H&M (bought at Fretex, the Salvation Army shop)
Pants: Ton-ups by Freddies of Pinewood
Shoes: Eurosko
Necklace: Lydias Vintage on Etsy

OOTD - May 1st

This was my outfit of the day yesterday, but a few moments after snapping this picture my friend asked me to come out and play. Even though the sun was shining it was chilly so I had to put my summer fantasies away and change into something a little bit warmer. So this was my outfit for yesterday morning. :)

Shirt - Gina Tricot
Skirt - Fretex (The Salvation Army store)
Brooch - Fretex (The Salvation Army store)
Hair flower - Pin Up Couture
Flats - I have no idea! :)

The skirt has no tags but I don't think it's very old. They also had a matching top that was veeery big. It looked like something women in Africa would wear, so who knows, perhaps this skirt traveled a long way to reach me. I left the top behind, but I absolutely loved the print so the skirt came home with me.

I usually roll my hair in foam rollers and sleep with them overnight. Yesterday I gave pincurls another try, but with the same result as I get every time - Frizz galore! I need more practice to get it right and I really would like to, because boy were they more comfertable to sleep in! Time for another YouTube session of tutorials before I call it a day. :)

Welcome May!

The first day of May has been gorgeous here! My best friend Bente texted me asking me if I was intrested in meeting up for some icecream bonanza, and boy was I! :) So I walked into town and met up with her and her boyfriend Alex. Since it's the International Workers Day (which is a official holiday here) the streets were filled with lots of people enjoying the sun.

Me with my McFlurry, Bente with her homemade vegan icecream.

Alex

We also stopped by Egon and had a little snack each. Me gusta! It's such a relief that the weather is slowly getting warmer and you can enjoy some time outside without freezing your behind off. :)

On my way home
